Privacy that doesn't depend on trusting us
No server, no employee, no third party, and no attacker who breaches our systems can read your private conversations. Here's exactly where that line sits.

Signal Protocol, not a homemade cipher
X3DH key agreement + Double Ratchet — the same cryptographic design behind Signal. Keys are generated on-device; only public keys and prekey bundles ever leave it.
Anti-trilateration by design
We never send raw coordinates to other clients. Distance is grid-snapped, offset, and quantized server-side, so vantage-point triangulation can't recover a real location.

Is Prowlr free?
Yes. Prowlr is free to use, with an optional Plus tier down the line for people who want extra features. The core experience — discovery, Right Now, events, and fully encrypted messaging — is never paywalled.
How is this actually different from Grindr and apps like it?
Same idea — proximity-based connection for gay men — built differently underneath. Messages, photos, and precise location are end-to-end encrypted, so they're never sitting in plaintext on a server to be mined, monetized, or leaked. No ads, no engagement-bait dark patterns, no feature bloat.
Do I need a phone number or email to sign up?
No. Auth is passkeys only — the same technology behind "sign in with Face ID / fingerprint." Nothing to leak in a data breach because there's no password database to steal.
What happens if Prowlr's servers get breached?
An attacker gets ciphertext they can't read, plus what's already public (your primary photo, handle, event listings). Private messages, private album contents, and exact location never touch our servers as plaintext, so there's nothing to decrypt.
Is there content moderation without you reading my messages?
Moderation applies to public surfaces — profiles, event listings — plus client-side reporting for private content, which a user has to explicitly submit. We don't scan private messages; we can't.
